Rosh Hashanah
Rosh Hashanah, meaning “head of the year”, is a two day celebration of the Jewish New Year. Rosh Hashanah honors the creation of Adam and Eve and is the anniversary of Original sin. The two days of services are focused around the essential idea that “God is King and it is our job to make an understanding our mankind’s role in God’s world.” The Shofar, or sounding of the Ram’s horn, represents repentance and the playing of a trumpet in light of the people’s coronation of their king. Over the course of the two day service, the Shofar is sounded exactly 100 times. It is customary that apples are dipped in honey before you eat them for a sweet and valuable year. Every new year it is important to pray for a year of life, health, and prosperity. It is both a time of rejoicing and of serious introspection, a time to celebrate the completion of another year while also taking stock of one’s life.
