The Inclusive Community Website
The school’s Mission emphasizes diversity and inclusion as essential. It is critical that we continue learning, celebrating, challenging our perceptions, and developing empathy as we commit to a better understanding of the importance that diversity contributes to our world and the societal challenges inherent with ethnicity, culture, gender, and sexual orientation.
An Inclusive Community Initiative must have pertinent and up-to-date information woven throughout the curriculum, faculty work sessions, and student programs. A truly inclusive community strives to empower all students, faculty, and staff to build on and promote a stronger Saint Mary’s Community in which all voices are respected and valued.
The Inclusive Community Initiative is a four-year project with a goal to provide education and resources for the entire Saint Mary’s College High School Community. The 2016 Senior Student Committee, along with Mr. Lawrence Puck, spent a great deal of time “setting the stage” for year one of the program by assisting in the creation of a website, providing a structure for conversations for the 2016 – 2017 school year, and also providing a vision with goals for the future of the program.
These talented seniors began their work in November with a few intense and meaningful conversations. After a breakfast meeting during Christmas vacation, they were finally able to visualize and support the creation of a website that will continue to grow each year to provide knowledge, various points of view, and a desire for hope and love when it comes to race, culture, gender, and sexual orientation and identity.
Even though the student committee was disappointed that many of the hopes and goals they set for their year were not realized, they do have great hope that the next senior committee will carry on with their suggestions and goals.
The website will be posted on the school’s home page by the end of May. It will reside under the Student Quick Links section.
